Saturday, January 16th, is National Religious Freedom Day. Enacted in 1992, this commemorative day falls on the date 230 years ago that the Virginia General Assembly adopted Thomas Jefferson’s 1786 Statute Establishing Religious Freedom for Virginians. It was this groundbreaking measure that became the basis for the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and created our cherished American freedom of religion.
So, how will you celebrate this fundamental human right that is the envy of the world?
While many groups recognize the day by encouraging Christians to participate in appropriate activities in civic and educational spheres, we as Faith Driven Consumers are uniquely positioned to exercise our first freedom in the economic arena by shopping our faith in the marketplace. How? By simply taking the Faith Equality Index with you as you shop—and using it to make faith-informed decisions about where you spend your hard-earned dollars.
So far, we’ve rated more than 400 brands and there are even free Apps available for you to use on your Apple or Android smartphone. And we’re adding new company reviews each month to help you be a good steward of the resources God has entrusted you with.
As a community, we are 41 million strong—17% of the U.S. adult population—and we spend $2 trillion annually. With economic power like this, we can take the lead in transforming the culture by steering our dollars in ways that glorify God and encourage companies to welcome Christians in the marketplace on par with other groups.
So let’s get out there this National Religious Freedom Day and exercise our freedom to express our faith in the marketplace—while we still have time to do so. For as we all know, without religious freedom there can be no true freedom.
