Lowe’s Home Improvement recently chose to end its advertising in a TLC program about Muslim families living in America. The eight-part series, “All-American Muslim”, features five families living near Detroit. Proponents state that the show portrays the Muslim lifestyle, including their problems and struggles.
A pro-family group in Florida approached companies to remove advertising from this program because they believed it was “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.”
In response to numerous concerns voiced by consumers, Lowe’s decided to retract its advertisements because it saw the program becoming “a lightning rod” and desired for individuals and communities to discuss these issues openly in the marketplace of ideas.
Unfortunately, Lowe’s is now undergoing significant backlash from Muslim consumers, media, and political figures such as South Bay Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance). Opponents have criticized Lowe’s response as surrender to bigotry and religious discrimination. Curiously, those same voices of religious tolerance are silent when Christian pastors are arrested in Dearborn for preaching the gospel during a Muslim festival.
As Faith Driven Consumers, we support the Constitutional right to freedom of religion and speech for all, Muslims included. We support the rights of Christians who voice their convictions based on their faith and calling. All consumers have the right to express their needs to companies they do business with. Those companies should be free to respond in a manner they feel best represents the needs of their consumers. We are thankful that companies like Lowe’s are willing to listen and take action.
As Faith Driven Consumers, we need to actively support Lowe’s and other companies that respond to us. We are thankful to them for honoring our requests and considering our needs. By retracting advertisements on a controversial program and being sensitive to concerns raised by Christian consumers, Lowe’s now faces a boycott from the Muslim community and an assault from the mainstream media.
If you agree with Lowe’s or any other company’s response on this or similar issues, show them with your support. Declare your preference for them by shopping, or writing them in support. We must respond quickly to affirm the reasonable judgment taken by Lowe’s and encourage its efforts to listen and respond to Christian consumers.
